چکیده

An experiment was carried out to compare the digestibility of five concentrate ingredients (barley, beet pulp, citrus pulp, maize gluten feed and grain screenings) in cattle or sheep, fed at 1.2 maintenance. Four wether sheep and four steers were fed each concentrate, which comprised 800 g/kg of the dietary dry matter (DM). The remaining 200 g/kg was a hay/soyabean meal mixture whose digestibility was determined simultaneously in another four sheep and cattle. Following diet introduction and adaptation, faeces were collected for a 10-day period. Across diets, there was no difference (p >0.05) between sheep and cattle in digestibility of organic matter (OM, 0.784 and 0.78, respectively, standard error of the difference (s.e.d.), 0.0049), crude protein (0.586 and 0.577, respectively, s.e.d. 0.0192), or neutral detergent fibre (0.632 and 0.628, respectively, s.e.d. 0.0116). However, cattle digested the OM (0.749 vs. 0.724, p <0.05, s.e.d. 0.0106) of maize gluten feed better than sheep, but there were no significant differences (p >0.05) between sheep and cattle with any of the other four feeds. These results do not support previous conclusions that sheep digest concentrates better than cattle, but they do suggest that there are differences within specific feeds. # 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Effect of salinomycin level on nutrient digestibility and ruminal characteristics of sheep and feedlot performance of cattle.

A sheep digestion trial and two feedlot trials with cattle were conducted to study effects of an ionophore, salinomycin, on nutrient digestibility, ruminal metabolism and cattle performance. In trial 1, addition of salinomycin at 5.5, 11 or 22 ppm to 60% concentrate diets fed to ruminal-cannulated rams had no effect (P greater than .05) on apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matt...

Effects of fiber source on apparent digestibility and ruminal fermentation parameters in sheep fed high-concentrate diets

Sixteen rams (mean age: 13 mo; mean live weight: 40.0 ± 2.4 kg) were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments in a completely randomized design (4 rams per treatment). Diets (dry matter basis) contained 65% concentrate and 35% alfalfa hay (control diet, T1), 35% wheat straw (T2), 35% barley straw (T3) or 35% maize straw (T4). Total-tract apparent digestibility for dry matter, organic matter...

Effect of thymol and carvacrol on nutrient digestibility in rams fed high or low concentrate diets

Published data on the effects of essential oils (EO) on in vivo nutrient digestibility in sheep are contradictory. In 2 experiments, the effect of thymol and carvacrol on nutrient digestibility was studied in sheep fed with high (70%) or low (52%) concentrate diets, using incomplete Latin Square designs. The essential oils were mixed with the concentrate portion of the diet at the rate of 0.0, ...

The effect of the substitution of imported raw materials (corn and soyabeans) by local food resources (barley, white sorghum, triticale and horse bean) on the parameters of faciesfermentation and digestibility in the rumen of sheep was evaluated. Four Sicilo-Sarde rams 4.8±0.5 years of age with an average live weight of 45.25±3.5 kg, permanently canulated in the rumen and housed in individual c...

Chemical Composition and in vitro and in vivo Digestibility of Tea Waste in Sheep

Tea processing includes several stages and in three of them namely drying, fiber-mat and screening some of the product is wasted. In this study, 25 percent of the tea processing plants in Iran were selected. Three samples were taken from each plant and analyzed for chemical composition and in vitro and in vivo digestibility and voluntary feed intake. Results showed that crude ...
